This unit will launch with an exciting author's study to get the students invested in learning more about reading. This unit is planned for the author Mo Willems, but a different author may be substituted. The students will learn more about the author and their motivation for becoming one. They will study the author's unique craft and learn different comprehension strategies to better understand their books. In the planning and research stage, the students will take a deep dive into understanding story elements and begin practicing a few reader's theaters using Mo Willems books of choice. In the creating stage, the students will be interviewing a peer, or a younger student if possible, about the types of books they like to read. The students will use this information to write their own fiction books. This study will culminate in a Reading Celebration day! The students will perform their reader's theaters and read/give their stories to the children they were written for. The goal of this celebration is to share the joy of reading! You may extend the celebration to have the students dress up as their favorite storybook characters and have extra reading time.
